Phase 3 is a CD-ROM for the Emulator III/X/ESI/E4 which incorporates 85 banks of digital instrumentation. It follows on the success of Phase 2 with a diverse array of categories from pop and rap to classical and jazz. Phase 3 is a large disk with over 460 megabytes of data.
Virtuoso X delivers a complete orchestra for Proteus X and Emulator X – providing you with every sample of E-MU’s acclaimed Virtuoso 2000 sound module. The Virtuoso X soundset was created from a single professional symphony orchestra, offering world-class string (section and solo), woodwind, brass and percussion (over 20 percussion pieces) sampled under ideal conditions. Additional samples were recorded from the audience seats, allowing you to blend more or less natural hall sound into your virtual orchestra to deliver amazing realism and consistency across all instrument sections.

The Emax was essentially a complete replication of the Emulator II using custom E-mu chips instead of standard off the shelf silicon chips. This new engineering increased reliability, and reduced the cost of manufacture. The sample resolution was the same 12-bits companded into 8-bits of memory, the samples were still monophonic, but the maximum sample rate was increased to 42kHz. Depeche Mode switched to using Emax’s from Emulator II’s on tour, and the Emax SE HD’s can be seen and heard in use on t he 1988 USA t our video ‘101’.
